On 2 February, Daniel Clemente from University of Porto gave a talk for the general public on the following topic: “Wave energy: a sea of opportunities and challenges for a sustainable transition in Portugal”.
This event was organised by The Serralves Foundation as part of a series of conferences entitled “Conversas com Ciência”. It provided an opportunity to discuss Portugal’s path to achieving 85% renewables in the electricity grid and the sources still to be explored, such as wave energy. The country’s exposure to the Atlantic makes it a hot spot for this renewable source, with great potential for applications such as green hydrogen, offshore aquaculture and desalination.
Daniel gave an overview of the challenges and solutions in the sector, covering topics such as storage, offshore survivability and environmental issues. He also highlighted his work on international projects like HYDEA Interreg project. This event was a very good opportunity to present HYDEA objectives and outputs to non-specialists and to bring science and society together.
